This weekend the Mountain Air Pilots Association (MAPA) had their annual Airway-Fairway golf outing. Twenty groups representing eighty players from North and South Carolina and
Tennessee attended. The weather was perfect with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70’s. We had representation from ATC in Asheville, Greenville-Spartanburg, and Tennessee in
attendance, along with friends and guests of same.
Our registration desk, led by Rose Ray and Myrna Stevens arrived at 10AM to find GSP people waiting to get registered so they could go to the driving range and do some putting. By the
time our volunteers had set up for mulligans, the Jet Blue raffle, and the long drive contest we had a crowd waiting. All of the cart girls were busy loading clubs onto the carts, and directing traffic for parking.
Lunch was served in the Clubhouse at 11AM, followed by final preparations and announcements at noon. After thanking the controllers for all of the help they provide to
Mountain Air pilots coming to and from the mountain safely, and outlining what the Mountain Air Community Fund does, in conjunction with MAPA to give back to the needy of Yancey
County, play began with the twenty groups in a shotgun format.
A few people got lost navigating the mountain course, but when they did, there was a resident, or a cart person to provide directions. The course was in terrific shape, and the greens and pin placements were tough, but several groups figured it out. Even though each group was required to have two tee shots from each person there were a few groups who did very well. By the time scores were tabulated and closest to pin cards were brought to the clubhouse, it was about 5:15, and time was approaching for the long drive contest.
But before that could happen, the winners were awarded. Here’s how the prizes broke down:
1st Gross – Richard Phillips, Bill Bales, Pat Cubreth, Jay Harlen – Score of 59

As everyone was packing up and readying to leave for home, one group came and said, “Is there any way that we could stay overnight next year?” That is a sign of people who had fun. We have to do it again next year!!
